Children Need Everyday Heroes, April 11-13, 2005

The 2005 New York State Child Abuse Prevention Conference offered participants three days of learning, networking and renewal. Raymond Smith, president of the board of Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky, opened the event with a spirited speech to motivate those working “in the trenches” on behalf of children and families. Through the moving tale of “Kansas Charley,” Cornell Professor Joan Brumberg brought to life a thought provoking chapter in the history of the American justice. Finally, Sonia Manzano, best known as Maria on Sesame Street, drew from her own experiences growing up in the South Bronx to explore the strength of the child in his world, providing examples of how children supersede their circumstances with resiliency and the ability to see the bright side.
